BMW cars are known the world over for their style, elegance and downright perfection; so it’s no surprise they’ve featured in many a movie over the years. Here, we take a look at the top ten appearances that have secured BMW’s place on the silver screen.
1. BMW Z8 in… The World is Not Enough
Even though they’re known right around the world, that’s just not enough for James Bond. Pierce Brosnan regularly drives BMWs as he plays the most famous spy on the planet, but it’s this Z8 with its surface-to-air missiles that gets the nod here.
2. BMW Vision EfficientDynamics i8 Concept in… Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol
Ethan Hunt isn’t far behind Bond when it comes to his daring and often hair-brained antics. In this instalment of the Mission:Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise gets behind the wheel of BMW’s ground breaking electric supercar, showing that even daredevils can look after the environment too.
3. BMW 325iS Coupe in… The Chase
While some films feature high-speed pursuits as part of the action, the entire premise of this film is one long chase. Charlie Sheen plays a wrongfully-convicted man who kidnaps a wealthy heiress in a bid to avoid prison, and his car of choice for getting away from the boys in blue’s a 1993 E36 325iS Coupe.
4. BMW 633CSi in… Back to the Future Part II
Although another time-travelling set of wheels is the main star of the show in the Back to the Future movies, Griff Tannen’s BMW 633CSi does its best to steal the limelight in the franchise’s second film. It might not have been able to take you to the future, but it could hover above the streets to get you from A to B in serious style.
5. BMW 535i in… Ronin
Towards the end of the film, Natascha McElhone’s character Deidre has Robert De Niro hot on her heels. Her car of choice to get away is this 5 Series beast, which has plenty of agility as well as power for the job, although if we’re honest there’s not too much BMW can do to guard against tyres being shot at.
6. BMW 735i in… The Transporter
Another serious unit of a car, Jason Statham’s character Frank Martin combines style with the speed he needs to carry out his work in The Transporter. Again, though, the car doesn’t stand much of a chance when it comes up against the explosives that eventually finish it off.
7. BMW 7 Series in… Invictus
Although this car doesn’t get blown up or compete in a high-speed chase, it’s a great example of the luxury that BMWs bring to the table. If it’s good enough for Nelson Mandela, then it’s good enough for us.
8. BMW 326 in… Hannibal Rising
Now this car doesn’t appear in Hannibal Rising for very long, but the sheer beauty of the thing’s enough for us to include it on our list. With its distinctive front grille, round headlamps and sweeping wheel arches, the 1936 326 is a stunning piece of design.
9. BMW 5 Series in… The Bourne Supremacy
Jason Bourne’s a man who knows what he wants, and in choosing to steal a 1985 E28 5 Series in The Bourne Supremacy, he shows he’s got real taste too. He’s even respectful enough of this motor that he doesn’t get involved in any breakneck chases with it, which is quite something for Matt Damon in this action-packed franchise.
10. BMW 320i in… Heat
A film known for its iconic coffee shop scene, in which Al Pacino and Robert De Niro feature together on camera for the first time, the 1981 E21 320i that De Niro drives in the movie is a thing of classic blacked-out beauty.
