BMW M6 GT3 & GTLM

BMW is almost synonymous with motorsports.

There isn't a motorsports discipline you can name that BMW hasn't had some success in, but currently the brand's energies are directed at GT racing.

BMW M6 GT3 & GTLM

BMW has been represented with the Z4 as both a GT3 and GTLM car since 2010, with successes in endurance racing on both sides of the Atlantic, but the time has come for a change.

In 2016, the BMW M6 GT3 will be the new face of BMW Motorsports in GT and endurance racing. Like the Z4, the new car is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which has been modified for use in motor racing. The dry sumped engine can generate up to 585hp - an increase of around 70hp over the Z4 - and with the whole car weighing 1300kg it makes for a potent package.

Of course, the BMW M6 Coupe on which the M6 GT3 is based was already perfect for track use, but in order to meet the specifications of GT3 racing, several other modifications have had to be made. The car now sports a six-speed sequential racing transmission and high-performance motorsport electronics, while the driver’s seat is positioned towards the centre of the car. The team behind the GT3 has focussed on efficiency and ease of maintenance to minimise time lost in the pits to replace parts, particularly in longer endurance races.

Also making a debut for the 2016 season is the M6 GTLM. This is almost identical to the GT3 car, with some modifications to the rear aerodynamics and braking, along with different electronics, as mandated by the different regulations. This car will replace the Z4 GTLM for use in the North American IMSA WTSCC and it will be the first M6 to take to the track with the famous Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2016. Should it win the championship, the M6 GTLM would be eligible for an invitation to race the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2017.

For customers wishing to buy the M6 GT3 for competition, the net price for the car is 379,000 Euros (£275,000).
