Electric and hybrid cars becoming more and more popular. BMW are leading the way with the i3 and the i8 … and now the X5 eDrive.

The much-loved and admired BMW X5 has just become even more attractive, and not by altering the body or giving it a new set of sporty alloys.

It now includes new hybrid technology, which massively improves the mpg and makes it a lot more eco friendly.

The X5 eDrive follows the same path as the hugely-successful and highly-acclaimed i3 and i8 cars and is sure to mirror their success and prove very popular when it goes on sale later this year.

It has a combined power output of 309bhp thanks to a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel merged with an 111bhp electric engine. The electric engine has a range of up to 19 miles when running on its own.

With the hybrid system in place, the X5 can give 85.6mpg – a match for any car on the road today. Its performance isn’t jeopardised either, as it can still shift from 0-62 in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 130mph.

Every model of the big BMW offers four-wheel drive, even when in fully-electric mode, so it will be very happy off road as well as popping around town or cruising along a motorway.

Many hybrid cars opt for a futuristic design, the X5 sticks to the basics and looks just like a modern, new model.

If you look closely, you will be able to tell the hybrid model from the standard X5 by the charging point located beside the nearside front wheel arch. Subtle eDrive badges and aerodynamic wheels are also added for the eagled-eyed to pick up on.
