BMW has boosted its MPV line-up with the launch of the 2 Series Gran Tourer – the first premium compact model to offer seven seats.

Compact exterior dimensions are mirrored by significant flexibility inside the cabin; a sliding second row of seats with adjustable backrest, a third row of seats that fold into the floor and space for up to five universal child seats are just some of the features on offer.

Available with a choice of five turbocharged petrol and diesel engines - all plucked from BMW’s latest engine range - these state-of-the-art powertrains offer excellent efficiency and, with the 220i and 22d, a 0-62mph time as low as 7.8 seconds.

Utilising the cutting-edge EfficientDynamics and ConnectedDrive technologies, the new 2 Series Gran Tourer features BMW’s latest driver safety, energy-saving and connectivity features.

The Gran Tourer is 214mm longer and 53mm taller than the 2 Series Active Tourer but with a longer wheelbase of 2,780mm it offers a further increase in space inside the car.

Thanks to the higher roofline, passengers can sit tall and upright and legroom, specifically in the back, is comparable with that of many luxury vehicles.

The new 2 Series Gran Tourer comes with third row seats as standard in the UK – offering plenty of space for two extra passengers.

With the back seats up, the Gran Tourer can fit 645 litres of baggage – put the third down and this increased to 805 – or a massive 1905 litres with all the seats down.

Visually, the new 2 Series is striking with a trio of BMW icons – the twin kidney grille, twin round headlights and brand logo.

Despite the spacious interior, the front aspect is sporty and flat, with a low slung windscreen and a high bonnet limiting the apparent height of the car.

Clever bonnet sculpting and large air intakes on the outer edges of the nose add to the overall impression of rugged sportiness.
