BMW’s i8 plug-in hybrid sports car has been voted UK Car of the Year for 2015 – fighting off tough competition to be crowned Performance Car of the Year – the four-seat supercar also picked up the overall title.
The inaugural UK Car of the Year Awards took place in 2014 and are judged by 27 of Britain’s top motoring journalists.
Each judge uses their knowledge to pick out the top performer in 12 vehicles categories, before deciding on the overall winner from their favourites in each class.
John Challen, Managing Director of UK Car of the Year Awards, and Editor of ukcoty.co.uk, added, “The automotive industry has seen many hybrid models in recent years, but nothing quite like the i8”.
Adding, “The term ‘game-changer’ is sometimes overused when talking about new cars, but in the case of the i8, it is totally justified. The latest ‘i’ model completely redefines the performance car segment, and is helped by a hybrid powertrain that is really quite special.”
Judges were quick to praise the winning car. Paul Hudson of The Telegraph said it was “a fantastic demonstration that an electrically-powered future need not be dull”, while Graeme Lambert from Parkers added, “The i8 represents the future. It also shows us that being excited and being eco-conscious behind the wheel aren’t mutually exclusive.”
HonestJohn.co.uk’s David Ross, said, “The BMW i8 basically reinvents the performance car. Stunning to look at, and amazing to drive, there's nothing else like it out there”.
Top Gear’s Tom Ford described the i8 as “hybrid, clever, exciting – the i8 manages to be a consummate driving experience.”
The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor gives blistering acceleration and superior driver enjoyment yet still manages an incredible 135mpg whilst emitting just 49g/km of CO2.
The model is therefore exempt from both vehicle tax and the London congestion charge, which is part of the reason why it has been such a big hit with UK buyers, according to BMW.
Standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and upholstery, plus an 8.8-inch multimedia display.
The most advanced sports car ever offered by BMW, the company says that the i8 represents the future of the supercar, with its blend of dynamics, design and exceptional performance.
