The next generation of BMWs is set to take the automotive market by storm in India, as well as bring a new type of BMW to market here in the UK.The new X1, is a front wheel drive compact SUV with a four cylinder transverse mounted engine. This space saving solution will mean a roomier interior for drivers and passengers as well as lower production costs for BMW.
The result? A soft-roader that can compete against German rivals Audi and Mercedes Benz – especially important in the Indian market.
According to recent reports, to keep competitive in an increasingly competitive market BMW have decided to introduce the front wheel platform to provide ‘valuable economies of scale’. The X1 has been designed with a number of key elements in common with the next generation of MINI Countryman, and the engine will be used for a whole range of new BMWs too, a forward thinking way of keeping costs down.
The down side is that BMW have had to sacrifice some of the unique features that the manufacturer is renowned for, but it is likely that the X1 will continue to offer that ‘little bit extra’ compared to cars of the same class.
BMW plan to release the compact X1 in India within the next 12 to 18 months to maintain their prominence in the luxury car market, and the new X1 is due for release in the UK in 2015.
