BMW m double clutch transmission explainedIn times when fuel efficiency is a big deal, the technology behind double-clutch transmission is of increasing importance for many car owners, as the way it works reduces disruption to power transmission, reduces friction and thereby reduces the amount of fuel needed to get from A to B.

To run efficiently, BMW took inspiration from the likes of Ferrari and developed a seven speed gear box that utilises two internal hydraulic clutches (and no actual clutch inside the car with you), one to work with even gears, and one to work with odd gears.

The science behind this simple idea is that when in third gear for example, the second and fourth gear are also running simultaneously, ready to be used with no disruption to power whenever you are ready to change gear thanks to the friction-less clutch systems. When you do change gear, you can do so without the use of a clutch pedal, simply use the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The innovative M double-clutch system was developed by BMW to produce an automatic gear change solution that performs as well as, in fact, better than manual cars that use standard friction clutches; with the added benefit of having less weight than traditional technologies that also take up more space.

The BMW’s seven speed M double-clutch transmission has been specially constructed for high revving BMW engines to ensure that disruption to the tractive force is minimised as much as possible through extremely fast, uninterrupted gear changes which manage to be both sporty and comfortable.

Without the need to use a clutch, there is no disruption to the transmission of power, resulting in a smoother and more economic drive, even in sport mode.
