The high-precision direct injection engines increase acceleration, offer greater fuel efficiency and reduce ‘turbo lag’- the delay between hitting the accelerator and pulling away. A new six-speed automatic gearbox was added to the range in 2007. This enables the X5 to change gear in half the time of the previous automatic transmission, enhancing the car’s sports-like drive.

When it comes to road handling, Dynamic Stability Control+ (DSC+) comes as standard to keep you and your passengers ‘glued to the road’ whatever the driving conditions. Optional extras include Active Steering, to help manoeuvre the X5 when driving slowly and reduce steering effort when driving at higher speeds, and Adaptive Drive. Comprising the active chassis control system, Dynamic Drive and Electronic Damper Control, Adaptive Drive evaluates the road and adapts the suspension accordingly to provide excellent handling and minimal body-roll when cornering.

The X5 is also the first BMW SAV to offer optional Head-up Display. This projects important information onto the windscreen so you can check everything from your speed to your petrol gauge without taking your eyes off the road. Other safety features include the unique BMW Run-flat tyres, enabling you to drive safely for up to 150 miles should you be unfortunate enough to have a puncture.

The range of extras include a high-quality DVD system for playing video DVDs and audio CDs, and four-zone air conditioning to let you enjoy a comfortable cabin temperature whatever the weather. What’s more, you can fold down the back seats to achieve 1660 cubic litres of capacity, more than enough room to carry sports and activity equipment, and there’s an optional third row so you can seat seven passengers comfortably.
